Drip Edge: Code Requirements & Why It's Often Missing

Drip edge is the metal flashing at every roof edge. Modern code requires it. Pre-2012 homes often don't have it. Here's what it does, what it costs, and why it should be on every estimate.

Drip edge is the thin metal flashing installed along every roof edge (eaves and rakes) that directs water into the gutter and away from the fascia. The 2012 and later International Residential Code requires it on every roof, so new installs always have it. Pre-2012 homes often don't - which is the #1 cause of rotting fascia, soffit, and decking edges on older roofs. Cost on a re-roof: $300 - $700 for a typical home.

What drip edge does

Three jobs:

  • Directs water into the gutter. Without drip edge, water running off the shingles can wick back under the edge and run down the fascia (the board behind your gutter).
  • Protects the fascia and decking edge. The plywood deck edge is the most exposed wood on the whole house. Drip edge keeps water off it.
  • Blocks insects. Drip edge closes the gap between the deck and fascia where wasps and squirrels otherwise get in.

Code requirements

The 2012 International Residential Code R905.2.8.5 was the first to mandate drip edge on asphalt-shingle roofs. Subsequent code editions (2015, 2018, 2021, 2024) carry the requirement forward and extend it to other roof types. Specifically:

  • Required at both eaves and rakes
  • Must extend a minimum of 0.25 inches below the deck and at least 2 inches up onto the deck
  • Must overlap a minimum of 2 inches between sections
  • Underlayment must lap over the eave drip edge (under it on rakes)
  • Must be corrosion-resistant metal: aluminum, galvanized steel, copper, or stainless

Some jurisdictions still allow older installations to remain without drip edge until reroofing - at which point the code applies. Any re-roof permit pulled in 2012 or later should have drip edge in the spec. If yours doesn't, it's an oversight (or the contractor is cutting corners).

Types: D, L, T, and F

Drip edge is sold by profile letter:

  • Type D ("T-style"): The current standard. T-shape with a kick-out at the bottom so water drips clear of the fascia. Code-compliant everywhere.
  • Type L: Simple L-shape. Older standard, still legal in some jurisdictions but inferior because there's no kick-out.
  • Type F ("gutter apron"): Long top flange. Used at eaves when there's no gutter, or as a gutter apron behind a gutter.

Type D is what should be on your estimate for a standard residential job. If the estimate just says "drip edge," ask which profile and gauge - 26-gauge is the standard; 24-gauge is heavier (better) and 29-gauge is cheap (avoid).

Why pre-2012 roofs are often missing it

Before 2012, drip edge was a best-practice upgrade, not a code requirement. Many production builders skipped it to save $200 - $400 per house. The result: thousands of homes built in the 1990s and 2000s now have rotting fascia, peeling paint at the edges, soffit damage, and decking failure at the perimeter.

If your roof is being torn off and your house is pre-2012, the re-roof is the natural time to add drip edge. The crew is there, the shingles are off, and adding it is hours of labor and a few hundred dollars in material - cheap insurance against perimeter rot.

What it costs

  • Material: $1.50 - $3.00 per linear foot for aluminum Type D
  • Installed labor: Bundled into the re-roof; typically $300 - $700 total for a 200 - 280 ft perimeter on an average home
  • Color upcharge: +20 - 40% for matched/painted (vs mill finish)

The takeaway

Drip edge should be on every modern re-roof estimate. If it's not, ask why. If your house is older and never had drip edge, the re-roof is the right time to add it - you're getting a much better roof for a small line-item upgrade.
